John and Elvis are Dead

YDGers, I've selected John and Elvis are Dead to close out this week. This is one the best cuts off the Patience album and a great example of a slow soulful George classic.

The song tells a story of a friend who's been in a coma since 1975 and wakes up to the reality of today. And then asks to be put back into a coma. He asks "If Jesus Christ is alive and well, how come John and Elvis are dead." Pretty deep. I love the Beatles -- one of my all time favorite bands -- I am, however, not a big fan of John worship. This song still works for me because the question is balanced out with Elvis, clearly not the same brand of narcissistic weirdo. The question really balances out.

The video is extraordinary. I think Geo was going through a fat phase here because he shows none of his signature moves. This video flows seamlessly from George's face to footage of different significant cultural moments over the last 40 years. Lots of John Lennon (and Yoko) footage. I suspect the Presley estate wouldn't let him use Elvis footage because there is but one image of him right at the end. The whole thing is really kind of mesmerizing.

I’ve been listening to this one all week. Love this song. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
