Everyone Needs a Father Figure

As the newest comer to the unyielding greatness of Γιώργος-Κυριάκος Παναγιώτου aka Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou aka George Michael, I've found it incumbent upon myself to do enough research that I might speak as eloquently and intelligently as the other YDG contributors when I confront whichever small piece of the George Michael Universe is assigned to me. Today, that small piece is called "Father Figure"; the third single off the Faith album and GEO's sixth #1 single.

To fully appreciate the magnitude of this video's black & white shoulder-padded brilliance, I began my due diligence by typing "father figure" into Wikipedia. Surprisingly, what came up first was the definition of a father figure in the context of interpersonal relationships. A father figure, the screen flashed back at me,

is usually considered to be an older man, often one in a position of power or influence, who arouses emotions usually felt for a person's father and with whom a person identifies psychologically.

How apt. This describes George Michael to a T.

  • Older man? check.
  • In a position of power or influence? Please. His perfectly manicured beard cast such a large 5 o'clock shadow that multiple aspects of his personal style influenced an entire generation's conception of masculinity. From the jeans to the jacket, from the beard to the aviators, from the hair to the stare; no popular figure represented what men wanted to be and women wanted to be with the way George Michael did.
  • Arouses emotion? Seriously. This blog of daily reverence was conceived from the volcano of emotion that sprung to life with the announcement of GEO's 2008 20-city North American summer tour. And if that's not convincing enough, watch (and listen to the reaction to) this live performance from The Concert of Hope at Wembley in 1993. In an understated and impeccably tailored suit, alone in the middle of the stage atop a 6' wide riser he never leaves, GEO--restrained in both appearance and demeanor--delivers such a powerful and resonant performance of "Father Figure" that afterward, organizers of the AIDS charity benefit sought to retroactively re-title the show "The Concert of Hope You Can Handle This Shit Because George Michael is About to Buy and Sell Your Emotional Core in Five Minutes and Thirty-Six Seconds".

George, Stripped Down

Today's YDG features our hero singing the amazing Fastlove -- Unplugged. I have to tell you guys, you really learn an artist's true talent in this format, and GEO succeeds in spades. His voice, buttressed by the amazing background singers, is simply perfect. I actually like this version better than the studio one. Of course, I must reference his look --- "older" look in full force, suit, perfectly fitting. And look how hard it is for him to stay in the chair?? Our boy needs to MOVE!!!

And another bonus: Today is this YDG member's birthday (im somewhere in my 30's...) ! In celebration of myself, heres another little Geo post I think youll enjoy:

Freedom 90 - it was bound to happen

YDGers this won't be my best post, but I wanted to make up for it with a stellar performance by our Georgie boy. Here it is folks, tea's on and Freedom 90 is ringing through the air!

How can you not enjoy Geo hanging from his ankles in a doorway about to do sit-ups while cutting to the compilation of beautiful women George is no longer interested in (we heard it from Oprah first).

Enjoy the video, I'm currently on a field trip touring colleges in the northeast with 11 of my students. Wish me luck! And God bless Geo for curing AIDS.

Sexual Healing

Great meeting of the team last night. YDG is turning into a movement that is larger than all of us. Greg, you were missed, but we understand that getting tail needs to be a top priority for you. Geo would approve.

In honor of Greg chasing the bird, I am posting yet another incredible performance of George's from a tribute concert. This time, it's Sexual Healing at the Nelson Mandella tribute. Needless to say, it's incredible. He is a god, no question. The soul, the rhythm, the charisma, what can I say? I don't know if it makes it into the league of yesterday, but it's pretty effing good.

He's rockin' the Faith look, which we learned last night is Nils's favorite GM look. It's definitely a good one.

Greg, in the comments section, the team would like a full report on last night, how the chateau went, and if you deployed JTAC in your efforts.

Long And Winding Road

As a threshold matter, I am intimidated by Kitty, The O, and John with your posts and commentary.

I was all set to post "I Can't Make You Love Me" and then I stumbled upon this gem. The controversial Lennon/McCartney ballad off of Let It Be which some say led to the break up of the Beatles. Here is Geo live at the Concert for Linda (McCartney). Strings, piano, and that voice. But wait, why is this video 9 minutes long? Oh yeah, because after he ripped your guts out and slip slided all over them to make you feel the pain, he takes it all away and goes into "Faith". A simple, beautiful medley, filled with hope even in the deepest despair. And super tight goatee. What else could you want? Seriously, what? NINE minutes folks, plan accordingly.

An Easier Affair

After George's inspiring story of coming out and getting happy from yesterday's YDG post, I thought An Easier Affiar would be fitting. This is the kind of uber-pop song that is a George staple. It's in the tradition of Judy Garland's "Get Happy", and Madonna's "Holiday" -- they are maniacally positive and espouse a sort of super simplisitc positive philosophy or world view. In this one, George talks about being gay and being positive about it. The lyrics are great, but the real story here is in the tracks and production. This is a great work out song -- not that I actually work out, but I like to picture myself working out to this song. In my vision, the music is just effortlessly pushing me forward on the treadmill and I am just gliding on air. George's music is so escapist sometimes. Anyway, love this song. He'll definitely play it at our show!

George. Oprah. Magic!

Ok kids, time to take YDG to another level. This time "Oprah gives back" to all George fans with this excellent interview with our man right after the entrapment episode. Focus on the first three minutes, when George cooly recounts the LAPDs sting on him. I love the line where he talks about his public outing right across the street from the Beverly Hills hotel (had to be in a showbiz way!).

Of course you cant talk about this nugget without focusing on Geo's looks - definitely the gayest look with the longer hair ive ever seen. Look at those perfectly waxed eyebrows! the eyeliner! and boy does he work the all black look perfectly. just the best. Best to watch this when youre not busy at work, as this is Oprah at her best, and the interview draws you in. Also note the adoring crowd, that laughs at any joke George says -- we shouldve been there!!!

One more random observation: is it me or does George's voice sound a lot like Simon Cowell?? Close your eyes and see for yourself. Enjoy!!!

Do they know it's Christmas? - Band Aid

It's time to deck the halls and hang your stockings with care for this post. I hope this is Kosher (never realized how funny that phrase could be when talking of posting a Christmas Carol), but I wanted to dabble into George's Yule Tide Carols/philanthropic side with Band Aid's "Do they know it's Christmas?"

To raise money for the starving citizens of Africa, 80s icons from around the globe collaborated on one of the most outrageous Christmas songs of all time. Listen to this line up: Bono, Sting, Boy George, Phil Collins (on drums of course), Bananarama, Simon LeBon, and of course our beloved George! Leave it to George to shine under pressure among this crowd with his solo in the second verse and cameos throughout the rest of the video. His attire is stellar, his voice heaven-sent, and his message positive - what more could a fan ask for?

Enjoy the video! On a more personal note, this video brings me back to a time of Pop Up Video on VH1 where my cousins and I would compete on Christmas Eve to see who could name the most 80s icons in the video when the chorus starts. Take a gander and see how many you can get!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=qsqsiJRiCY0

I even found a Band Aid performance at the Live Aid concert in London in 1985 - take a look at George's bright yellow shirt sporting that great 5 o'clock shadow!

I'm Back!

I'm back from the dreaded city of Portland, OR where I saw more "Impeach!" and "Bush is a War Criminal" bumper stickers than I care to count. Everyone out there is very against "the corporations."

(On a YDG note, I am extremely impressed with the caliber of posts this week. We're really hitting our stride! Keep the comments coming: YDG is like a great relationship. You have to nurture it to keep it healthy.)

For today's post, I decided to mix it up with a fan tribute video from someone named Big Dan. He's extremely insane, but shares our passion for George as well as the song Jesus to a Child. He goes for the Faith look, which I love, including George's 25 year 5 o'clock shadow. Impressive.

And for a bonus clip, I am including a rehearsal of George and Lisa Stansfield singing These Are the Days of Our Lives. Since YDG has been a great observer of George's "moves," I think this is a perfect clip demonstrate how natural and organic his moves really are. He even does them in rehearsal. There is a crowd at rehearsal, too. And they are all just sitting there mesmerized. I can relate.

Jesus To A Child

So, here it is, my premiere YDG post. I thought I'd bring it down a bit, we've had a lot of the "For The Feet" from George. But now, we go "For The Heart".

We've got the 1995 single off the Older album. Now, I have to admit, I always thought this song was rather, um, sexy. Only to make me slightly conflicted putting on a song with "Jesus" in it as "make out" music. Don't judge me! Ok, anyway....

What you may not know about "Jesus To A Child," according to Wikipedia, is that the song is a tribute to George's friend and lover Anselmo Feleppa whom he met in Rio de Janeiro in 1991. Feleppa died two years later from an AIDS-related brain hemorrhage. Heartbroken, George was unable to write for the next 18 months, paralyzed by grief. Yet, he wrote "Jesus To A Child" in little more than an hour, indicating that the time was right to move on with his life.

I now invite you to sit back, put your phone on "send calls" and let the song just wash over you.

Your Daily George: Freedom 84

Your Daily George: Freedom 84

Freedom 84

Ok kids, after Solano's scorching video of modern George, let's go back in time to 1984, when George (and his sidekick) broke big around the world. Thankfully, we have the original "Freedom" video to give us a peek into George's emerging popularity.

First and foremost, I love this song. It is truly a "feel good" tune. Now the video: its all about the inagural WHAM invasion of communist china, and you have to love george with the camcorder and communist china hat -- it can barely contain that mane of hair!!

But clearly the best part is George acting like an athlete trying to play soccer -- how awkward was that kick he attempted!!! What a shame he had to put on that facade (don't worry Geo, we know what was really going on at the Great Wall Hotel!!! :30 of video...)

Lastly we get some nice live concert footage of Wham in their heyday (Ridgely is just as useless on stage as he is on the albums, granted).

Freeek!

This is my first post to YDG, so I figured I'd go for pure "wow" factor with Freeek!(yes, three Rs). **DISCLAIMER** If you are highly-respected in your office, you may not want to watch this video in front of co-workers. George has done it again - brought sheer sex appeal into our lives with this edgy gem-of-a-hit from 2002. Walk into any gay club on the east coast and you will hear this within 5 songs - the gays love them some George.

After a 6 year hiatus, George released Freeek! as the first single from Patience - talk about an attention-grabber! In my personal, albeit flaming opinion, you can't turn your head from watching this video for three main reasons: 1) the repetitive "Ooo, touch it," 2) the fact that he has four leather-bound women on a leash during 4/5 of the video, 3) the dude man-scaping himself in the bathroom at 2:07.

If that wasn't enough for you, there's the brilliant dance breakdown at 3:00 where he slaps one of his "bitches" on the tuckus, immediately followed by a dog mounting his mate. Now that you all think I'm nuts and/or a nympho, enjoy the video!

Outside

For today's installment, we're going to go with the scandalous "Outside" video. According to youtube, this is the first video he did after he came out, and after the bathroom incident where he was set up. Enough history -- let me draw your attention to 2:50 of the video, where George, dressed in a police uniform lays down some serious moves. Crack open a window before watching kids, this Daily George is HOT!

Update from KHD: In my search for an Outside video we could imbed, I came across this live version. Pretty incredible. I wish George had stepped out of the helicopter!

Ahhh, Careless Whisper

And for our first official day on www.yourdailygeorge.blogspot.com , I thought we'd go straight to the heart of the matter. Careless Whisper is one of the first songs George ever wrote actually. When asked about what the meaning, George really didn't know as the song and lyrics just came to him and he didn't know where from -- the story in the song was not an experience he had had. He even wrote the signature sax solo in his head while riding on a bus. So, in case you were wondering about whether this gifted artist was tapped into something the rest of us are not, the answer is yes.

The video is unreal. Our George poses as a straight man in a mesh back trucker baseball cap, short shorts, and white tube socks. The scenes on the yacht are beyond the pale and capture the essence of the 1980s in a way that no other image really can. (Think Duran Duran Rio, etc.) As totally ridiculous as this narrative short film set to music is, the song is incredible and this was the first hint of what was to come with George. Oh, and don't confuse this with the parody "Hairless Sister" from the Dr. Demento show.

UPDATE: Friend of YDG Greg Gersch found this clip of Hairless Sister. Brilliant!

Fast Love

So, after yesterday's over the top clip, I decided to take us down a notch and bring us back to earth. This is what I would call a George Michael workhorse: Fast Love. You always go back to it. You always put it on your mix tapes, your workout mixes, etc. The production value on this one is among some of the best pop music out there -- very tight. I would say that this is during George's super gay phase, but if there's one thing YDG has taught me, is that all of his career is super gay. Enjoy!

Somebody to Love

Today’s installment of YDG chronicles a special event, the Freddy Mercury Tribute Concert. Of all the performances, George’s rendition of Somebody to Love was by far the best. Watch how he has the crowd in the palm of his hand, particularly at the end. I get chills every time. And he sings it absolutely brilliantly (not many can handle Freddie songs). It is my opinion that when Queen decided to tour again, there was only one choice. This clip represents a pop star at the very top of his game. Enjoy!

Knew You Were Waiting

This is one of my all time favorite George songs -- Knew You Were Waiting (for Me) with Ms. Aretha Franklin. With this song, George confirmed what we already knew: That he is one of the great white soul singers of all time and with this video, that he is in fact gay. Please note the footage of Sonny and Cher and Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell in the background. Somehow, whenever George and Aretha are lip syncing to each other, a giant Cher head is in between them. Kind of amazing. A great song and George is totally hot in it. One of those maniacally positive pop songs that keeps you going in life.

Everything She Wants

Here is your latest installment -- a blast from the past. A great Wham! song and a classic example of an 80s George video. Everything She Wants. Awesome song. Please note the entirely useless Andrew Ridgely with his lip syncing of the back up vocals and the fact that his guitar is not even plugged in duing the concert scenes. Their dual mullets are dreamy. He'll for sure play this one at our show. Enjoy!

Inagural Your Daily George

You've GOT to check this out. This is that great version of Stevie Wonder's "As" with Mary J. Blidge. The video is like the coolest video I've ever seen. The whole thing takes place in a night club occupied solely by different versions of GM and MJB. The greatest is the dancefloor packed with different versions of them. George shows off all his great moves -- I love George's dancing. This was his super gay phase -- he's got that sweet Casto District-style beard. Enjoy!

Jen UPDATE: It saddens me to report, this clip has been removed from YouTube. This I can promise you, we will do whatever it takes to find it again.
