Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me

I'm dedicating this post to the most beautiful Staten Island Italian man I have ever met... Greg Orlando.

"Ladies and Gentlemen Mr. Elton John!" It's as though we were living in the dark ages before these profound words were exclaimed by our beloved Geo. Perhaps this is personal preference, but I would have to say "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" is one of Geo's greatest collaborations with another singer/song-writer. His vocals on Elton's 1970s hit are heavenly, that electric blue jacket is an attention grabber, and the aviators are the icing on the cake for a monumental live performance.

As far as Elton is concerned, what's with the MC Hammer Jammer pants? I guess it's just him coming off the "Benny and the Jets" era but trying to class it up for our hunk of a man. Speaking of, on a personal note (yes, I just referred to myself as a hunk of a man), this song has two of my all-time favorite gays performing together and embracing at the end... a beacon of light in a confusing time in this gay's life.

So, my fellow YDGers, enjoy this classic Geo/Elton duo on this lovely Monday afternoon. Those of you who were present at Katherine's birthday (Congressman Orlando), you have single-handedly turned my world upside down - and I mean that in the gayest interpretation possible. Those of you who were in L.A. you missed leaps and bounds in the bonding of YDGers.

One other announcement: we will be having a pre-party before the concert at my apartment since I live exactly 1 block away from the Verizon Center. You will all be receiving a party favor that may change your life.

First, I am truly touched by this dedication. As I convene focus groups, start raising money, lock the skeltons in the closet (I should lock this blog!) and prepare for a potential congressional run, support by fellow studly italians such as Mr. Solano is truly what I need at this pivotal time!

Ok, to the music: you know surprisingly, I didnt know this song until George covered it, and initially thought that elton was simply a guest star on the great stage that is a George concert. Its definitely a great one, and I remember watching this video years ago and thinking, "wow, this guy's a STAR!"

Enough funny business, to the LOOK: All the staples are here: castro ceasar, golden hoop earing, contrasting sport jacket (though I have to say im not a fan of the 90's pastels, he looks so much better in the sleek black/grays/silvers he rocks on the 25 LIVE extravaganza. I also like the ease with which he moves while clapping and swaying to the music...

As for elton: The fact that they are placed so far from each other must be a metaphor for how they are such contrasts in gayness. On one side, you have the handsome greek god, a gay of the highest order; on the other you have a frumpy gay in a trucker hat, mchammer draws, and hideous colors. i respect his musical talent, but I dont see ever going to one of his shows -- how am i expected to look at THAT for 2 hours???

FINALLY, Can I say one thing?? Is there a greater example anywhere of american cheese/white trash than the slow song arm wave?? This crowd is so filled with cheese its oozing! If I see people do it at the Geo show I will shout them down in my loudest Staten Island accent.

John, you're like a stealth YDGer. You go away for weeks and then BAM! You're back and it's as if you never left. Welcome back, my friend.

This is a great one. I remember once listing to this while riding on a bus (where was I going on a fucking bus? I don't remember) I was just amazed by the power and talent of these two. I was thinking wow, these gay people really have something to be proud of here. What a non-ambiguously gay duo!

Yes, this is not my fav of the Geo looks. That jacket is so 90s – not unlike the look of one of our guests on Friday night. (Remember? The hair, the shirt, the shoes.) I like his Caesar, but the jacket has got to go. God love him.

I think this was like Elton’s first public performance after coming out of rehab for about the 20th time – this time for food addiction. It was about time he went in for that. So, it really just heightened the excitement. And may have accounting for his elastic waistband pants.

John, thank for today’s post. It is outstanding – we love it. Also, I cannot wait for the Geo pre-party. We might have to turn it into a fundraiser for Congressman Orlando.

Kitty is spot on, JS you are the stealth blogger. Extraordinary! Thanks for the shout out, I'm truly truly truly bummed I missed out on the 34th annual celebration of Kitty's birth/1st annual YDG convention.

I disagree slightly GO, and it pains me to do so b/c you and I are right there with one another you know, but I have seen Elton John live and perform this song. Captain Fantastic indeed. However, like everything else, you sprinkle in some Geo and you have magic.

I have but one question, GO, are you going to wear the key to the Playboy mansion or the "100% Italian" necklace to the Geo concert? I MUST KNOW!
