Poppa Was a Rollin' Stone

I've said it once, I'll say it again: Bring back the 90s! With this Geo standard, Killer/Poppa Was a Rollin' Stone, George solidified his righful spot in the pantheon of the greatest white soul singers of all time. He's up there with singers like Hall and McDonald -- in a white soul stratosphere that people like Joe Cocker and Steve Winwood can only dream of. He showed us where he was going early in his career by doing the fantastic duet with Ms. Aretha Franklin, but to do a Commodores cover -- and make it totally his own -- was ballsy to say the least. But he pulled it off and the Great White Soul Singer Hall of Fame will never be the same.

This video is so 90s -- I love it. The sepia tone, the pierced club kids, the diversity, shirtless man playing air trumpet -- all hallmarks of that bygone era. This video also has a good mix of images -- all of the faux commercial products that correspond with the lyrics. It's clever and entertaining -- I know he's telling us something deep, but I need to watch it a few more times before I can tell you you what it all means. Perhaps some of your comments can impart some wisdom.

Happy Wednesday and enjoy this one!

First, some editorial commentary: Sadly, prior to the advent of YDG, I had not seen many of these incredible videos, this one included. I have to say that MTV/VH1's ignorance of George's amazing work during the late 90's is downright deplorable.

Ok, im off my soapbox, now the video: This is perhaps the most clever of all george's work, though i have to say, the fact that there is NO site of George here is a bit of a disappointment. You all know how i love to comment on his look and editorialize on the particular era. That aside, the song is downright fantastic and is a true illustration of george's considerable musical range. Staggering.

Wait, Commodores? I thought this is the Temptations? What am I missing? I'm still cracking myself up at my comment on GO's post below. Oh but wait...Don't forget, Killer is actually a Seal song. Whoa.

I love the tribal beats. Don't think I wasn't rockin out to this at some club in Madison wearing a striped bodysuit and knee highs. No, silly, I didn't wear knee highs!

Shit, it IS a Temptations song! Silly me. The depth of the bench on YDG is amazing. We learn every day.

Don't worry Kitty. Being on YDG is like having a crash course in smooth soul, r&B, dance, and all things gaylordian. And we are all enriched by our ongoing education.
