Ahhh, Careless Whisper

And for our first official day on www.yourdailygeorge.blogspot.com , I thought we'd go straight to the heart of the matter. Careless Whisper is one of the first songs George ever wrote actually. When asked about what the meaning, George really didn't know as the song and lyrics just came to him and he didn't know where from -- the story in the song was not an experience he had had. He even wrote the signature sax solo in his head while riding on a bus. So, in case you were wondering about whether this gifted artist was tapped into something the rest of us are not, the answer is yes.

The video is unreal. Our George poses as a straight man in a mesh back trucker baseball cap, short shorts, and white tube socks. The scenes on the yacht are beyond the pale and capture the essence of the 1980s in a way that no other image really can. (Think Duran Duran Rio, etc.) As totally ridiculous as this narrative short film set to music is, the song is incredible and this was the first hint of what was to come with George. Oh, and don't confuse this with the parody "Hairless Sister" from the Dr. Demento show.

UPDATE: Friend of YDG Greg Gersch found this clip of Hairless Sister. Brilliant!

Ah, memories...I remember driving back from Northridge (a now dead mall in Milwaukee)with my friends Dawn, Tonya, and Wendy. Sitting in the rear facing seat in the back of the station wagon, amongst my purchases from Contempo, and the Hot Sam pretzel, was the shining glory found in the Musicland bag... Make It Big. I will never forget playing Careless Whisper on the walkman over and over again on the drive down Wauwatosa Ave back to Cedarburg.

First of all, GREAT historical context kitty! Now to the video: how 80's can you get?? from George's dress shirt buttoned up to the top miami vice look, to the mesh trucker hat, to the duran duran Rio yacht scene, this is truly a snapshot in time.

I have to say that these early videos of our George are so interesting. Watching him act straight, aching to break the chains of the music industry and be his true self is fascinating. You dont think he was trying to send us a signal with those gold earrings??? And i'd be remiss if I didnt reference the silhouetted sex scene, how awkward!!!

And what a song. whats better than when he breaks into "tonight the music sings so loud..." i get chills everytime! Gay George or fake straight George, the passion is undeniable.
